When Shadows Come to Light: Absorption

Ace refused to give up, even as Cara tried to block him out. 

“Ace. I told you to go away. I don’t want to hurt you, but I will if I need to.” 

Ace didn’t back down. 

“Please, just let me explain myself. I didn’t do anything.” 

Cara nodded, as she didn’t want him to keep bugging her, and inside she was curious as to what he had to say. 

“One day, many years ago, not long after you had come, I walked into The Office. The door was closed, but I needed to find Ms. Emerson, so I went in. People were gathered around Mr. Yates’s desk, discussing something in hushed tones. I decided to listen in. I didn’t catch much, but I did hear something along these lines: ‘The girl is dangerous, Chester. I don’t know why you saved her.’ ‘She can advance our cause. Her absorption powers will make us great one day, great enough to conquer EVIL. Cara is safe with us, as our powers make us immune. That is another thing we have over EVIL: we are able to be around her without their ridiculous hazmat suits.’ another person interjected ‘But we’re deceiving a little girl, and the whole facility.’ ‘You’ve had no such qualms about such things before, what’s gotten into you, Tracy?’

 Before Mr. Yates could respond, someone spotted me. Anger flashed through his dark eyes. He glared at me and commanded me never to speak of that moment again. I’ve kept my promise until now, as I trusted him, even still.” 

Cara glared at Ace. 

“How can you trust him? He’s lied to me for nine years about my life. I don’t need this. I’m going to find out about my past without him. I don’t need his protection. And I don’t need your lies either. You’ve broken my trust, Ace, and ‘My good opinion, once lost, is lost forever.’ 

Before Ace could even say a word, Cara ran away, for good. Away from him, away from the facility, away from Mr. Yates, and away from EVIL. She was much faster than Ace, and there was nothing he could do to stop her as she faded into the darkness, gone forever from their grasp.
